FAMILIES are being invited to a special fundraising walk aimed at helping those living with dementia.

A ‘free to enter’ Memory Walk event, organised by the Alzheimer's Society, will take place at Tatton Park on Saturday, October 12, starting and finishing at the Showground site.

Around 106,000 people live with dementia in the North West and many go undiagnosed, relying on loved ones for care and support.

Walkers will be able to ‘share advice’, ‘laughter’, and ‘support’ while also aiming to raise as much as they can for the charity.

Events co-ordinator, Elanor Wyatt, said: “Memory Walk is a family-friendly sponsored walk like no other.

“Thousands of people come together to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Society. It’s free to sign up and open to all.”

The Alzheimer's Society provides valuable support to those living with the condition and their families.

Last year more than 52,000 calls were answered through its dementia support line - offering caring strategies and service information.

This year there are 26 walks happening across the country, with multiple events in the North West, including at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool on Sunday, September 1, and Heaton Park in Manchester on Sunday, October 13.

The ‘great exercise’ which promises to bring ‘a sense of togetherness’ has also been taken up by celebrities such as television presenter Ruth Langsford.

“When I was first asked to join a Memory Walk it was an instant yes," she said.

"Anything I can do to help raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s Society - I didn’t have to think twice.

“Knowing with every step and pound raised, you can help to end the devastation caused by dementia. And Let’s face it, who doesn’t like to be awarded with a medal at the end!”

Ruth will be talking part in the Surrey Memory Walk on Saturday, September 14.
