A SCRAP yard has provided an update following a ‘devastating’ fire.

Around 60 tonnes of household waste was swept up in a blaze at Griffiths Park Industrial Estate on Friday evening (July 19), sending plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky.

A huge emergency service presence was called to the scene, with firefighters working throughout the night to control the fire.

This morning (July 20), Northwich Recycling and Demolition has taken to social media to share their thanks.

The Facebook post read: “Yesterday evening a large fire broke out at our yard on Griffiths Park in Rudheath.

“As a small local business, this is devastating for us, we are just grateful no one was hurt and for the fast response from the emergency services to get the fire under control.

“We would like to thank all the emergency services who attended and are still in attendance, alongside our director, who have tirelessly worked through the night to ensure the safety of the site and surrounding areas.

“We would also like to thank the local community for alerting the emergency services and for all the support shown.

“We will be open on Monday for skips but please bear with us for 3rd party tipping and collections.”

The fire began shortly before 6pm, with multiple calls made to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service,

Five fire engines, four relief fire engines and the service's high-volume water pump and water bowser were initially sent to the scene.

The blaze was divided into two sectors, with firefighters using main jets and ground monitors to extinguish the flames.

A mechanical digger was used to turn over the waste to help get to deep hotspots.

Crews worked throughout the night to control the fire, with two fire engines still in attendance as of 8am on Saturday morning.
