CADENT has provided an update on the reopening of a busy carriageway.

Emergency works have been taking place to repair a distribution pipe under the A556 westbound in Rudheath for a week now.

It comes after a member of the public reported smelling gas, resulting in a leak being discovered.

Today (July 17) gas network operator Cadent confirmed the pipe has been repaired.

Some required testing and monitoring will have to take place but it is hoped the lane closures which had been put in place should be lifted by the end of Friday at the latest.

Rachel Endfield, customer operations area manager for Cadent, said: “When we have a situation like this, our priority is always to keep everyone safe. We have taken action to make sure that’s the case.

“I’d also like to praise the person who rang the gas emergency service to report this smell of gas. That’s exactly the right thing to do – if you ever smell gas, day or night, report it immediately to 0800 111 999.”
