Seven delicious dessert destinations in Mid Cheshire made the shortlist for our latest Best of 2024 awards and Layers Treats took this year’s coveted crown for the second year in a row.

Tom Newey opened the popular business during one of the Covid-19 lockdowns in October 2020.

Starting off selling his products online from School Lane in Hartford, Tom bought a custom-made dessert trailer, which he takes to private events and festivals throughout the summer.

Tom said: “I have always been interested in business. Since the age of 10 years old I have created opportunities to sell products at local events and to family, friends and neighbours.

“After securing a place at Durham University to study business, I thought long and hard about my decision to go.

“I struggle with dyslexia and the current education system isn’t set up to maximise my learning.

“It is also extremely expensive to go to university and my intention on completing my degree was always to set up my own business.

“So, I decided the right decision for me was to start my business straight away.

“I began making my own chocolates and experimenting with new flavours to create a range of products that were of high quality but also fun.

“The business has evolved from there.

“We hand make our own Belgian chocolate treats, specialising in thick shelled, filled Easter eggs, spooky Halloween and Christmas treats and during the summer hot and ice cream desserts.

“We attend lots of events in the summer from weddings and corporate days to school fairs and even some music festivals too.”

Twenty-three-year-old Tom has always lived in Northwich attending St Wilfrid’s Primary School before moving onto St Nicholas High School and then Sir John Deane’s College.

Tom studied business at GCSE and A-level but much of his learning came from having his own small jewellery business since the age of ten, selling handmade jewellery.

Tom said: “I think there is something very exciting about food.

“As a family, we have always enjoyed coming together to enjoy food and spend time together, especially at important times of the year and for special celebrations.

“I certainly love trying new foods and some of my travels have enabled me to taste lots of delicious and fun treats.

“So many memories are created when we have fun and enjoy food together, so I felt that it was the perfect business for me.”

So, what makes Layers Treats different to others in the same area of business? What sets Tom’s business apart from his competitors?

Tom said: “I believe we distinguish ourselves from the competition in a few ways.

“Firstly, we like to create desserts and treats that look fun.

“Secondly, it is important that they taste as good as they look so we use Belgian chocolate and top with all the popular favourite treats.

“We want our customers to enjoy them and keep returning for more.

“Thirdly, most of us eat with our eyes first so our the photographs we take of our products is important.

“We aim to capture our chocolates in a light that shows just how good they are.

“Finally, our customer service is second to none and we ensure each customer has a great experience – this is so important.”

The fun-filled Easter eggs at Layers Treats

Layers Treats most popular items on the menu are our Easter eggs, which go on sale in January each year and sell out in February.

This year, because of the demand, Tom did a restock in April after Easter for those who still wanted Easter eggs but missed out.

During the summer, when Layers Treats offers hot desserts and ice cream desserts, the most requested items are Belgian milk chocolate covered strawberries and bubble waffles.

Tom’s favourite is the salted caramel brownie.

What do customers think of Layers Treats? Why did they think they deserved to win our latest award?

One happy customer said: “They are so good and I’m always excited when I see them at a local event or for sale in shops.

“They never disappoint and always come up with new and unique ideas.

“Northwich should be proud of everything they do!”

Tom said: “Our customers can’t get chocolates or desserts like ours anywhere else.

“Every day I get to create tasty desserts that are given as gifts to loved ones or enjoyed as a treat, so I know that they are more than just a piece of chocolate or a simple dessert - they are a way of making someone’s day that little bit more special.”

Hearing Layers Treats had made the shortlist again for 2024 meant a lot to Tom and he is grateful to his customers for taking the time to nominate the business and then vote for it to win.

Tom said: “We can’t believe that we’ve won for a second year in a row.

“We were up against some really tough competition again so it has definitely put a massive smile on all of our faces.

“We are so thankful to anyone who voted for us.

“Without the support of all of our amazing customers, friends and family this wouldn’t be possible.

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote for us and thank you also to everyone who has supported us in the past and continues to do so.

“We never underestimate that our customers have choice where to spend their money, so when they choose to spend it with us, we are very grateful.

“Thank you to the Northwich and Winsford Guardian for creating the opportunity for small companies like ours to have a spotlight shone on us.”
