COLLEGE students have completed a mammoth cycling challenge.

Pupils at Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College have been raising money for the Joshua Tree.

The team cycled a combined 250,000 metres from the school on Monarch Drive to Delamere Forest, raising nearly £1,000 for the children’s cancer support charity.

Organiser Tom Roberts, 17, said: “We had a fabulous day and are very proud to have completed our 250,000-metre challenge between our team.

“In the end, the weather was glorious despite our worries.

“We all cycled from Sir John Deane's, along the Weaver to the Joshua Tree as our midway point.

“This gave us the chance to meet the team and see the support they provide families affected by cancer in the local area.”

Tom and his friend Ash Kasem have organised several charity bike rides over the past four years.

The first ride, when they were in year nine, raised money for Cheshire Search and Rescue as a result of connections made through the Duke of Edinburgh program.

Since then they have raised funds for the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal and then the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal.

“This year, we have chosen to support The Joshua Tree, a local charity that provides comprehensive support services for families affected by childhood cancer,” Tom said.

“Our decision was influenced by seeing the impact of cancer on children and teenagers at school and recognising the essential role that The Joshua Tree plays in offering counselling, sibling support, therapy through the arts, and education support.”

This year’s charity bike ride proved to be the biggest Tom and Ash have ever organised.

Joined by their school peers for the ride on Wednesday (June 19), they have so far raised £935.

Amy Wilkinson, events and community fundraiser at The Joshua Tree, said: “Tom and Ash have organised an incredible fundraiser, bringing their friends together for a bike ride through Cheshire to raise awareness and funds for our families.

“Tom and his cycling team are truly amazing.

“As a charity, we don't receive any statutory funding. Having supporters like Tom means we can support more families affected by childhood cancer.”
