STUDENTS are cycling 250 kilometres for charity.

Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College pupil Tom Roberts and his peers are embarking on a mammoth cycling challenge.

They are raising money for Northwich-based childhood cancer support charity, The Joshua Tree.

Tom, 17, said: “At school, I have witnessed first-hand the impact of cancer on children and teenagers, affecting their health and wellbeing.

“This made me aware of the importance of support for the affected families.

“We chose to support The Joshua Tree because of their comprehensive support services, which include counselling, sibling support, therapy through the arts, and education support.”

Tom and his friend, Ash Kasem, have organised several charity bike rides now, with each supporting a different worthy cause.

This year, they will be joined by a team of their peers from Year 12 at Sir John Deane’s.

Together, they will cycle a collective 250 kilometres by riding from the school to Delamere Forest, via The Joshua Tree’s hub in Sandiway, on Wednesday (June 19).

“We are hopeful that this year will be our biggest and most successful bike ride to date,” Tom added.

“By involving more participants and raising greater awareness, we aim to significantly increase our fundraising efforts and provide substantial support to The Joshua Tree, helping them continue their vital work for families in need.”

Tom continued: “While there is a lot of excitement for the upcoming charity bike ride, we also have some worries about the ride itself.

“Cycling 250,000 metres between us is a significant physical challenge that requires endurance, strength, and stamina.

“Some of the participants are not regular cyclists and will be pushing their abilities.

“As always, the weather is likely to be unpredictable, but I am sure we will press through it.

“We do feel a pressure to meet or exceed fundraising targets, especially since this year aims to be the largest team and will have significant benefit to local families through The Joshua Tree.

“Despite these nerves, the wish to support The Joshua Tree is motivating us and we are excited about Wednesday.”
