Winsford chippy batters competition to take second fish and chip title

The Corner Fish and Chip Shop in Winsford is the “top plaice” in Mid Cheshire for everyone’s favourite fried food and has just scooped this year’s Best Fish and Chips award, retaining their title.

In April, we launched our Best of 2024 competition.

This year’s search for Mid Cheshire’s best in a whole host of categories started with hair and Fox Hairdressing was crowned our first winner quickly followed by JD’s Café and their pies and Blue Beauty Cheshire took the best nails title.

Next up, The Bowling Green is officially Best for Roast Dinners, we toasted The Grape and Bean for their cocktails and Zaza Café Bar serves up the area’s best breakfasts.

Then we moved onto fish and chips with customers and readers sending in their nominations and votes for their favourite plaice to get the perfect Friday night treat.

Eleven fantastic fish and chip suppers in Mid Cheshire made the shortlist with The Corner Fish and Chip Shop taking this year’s coveted crown making it back-to-back wins.

Annmarie and Terry Curzon have clearly got the recipe for success – serving top quality fish and chips Tuesday to Friday each week.

The couple, who have been together for 25 years, bought The Corner Fish and Chip Shop on Princess Street 16 years ago and the venue first opened in 1965.

Annmarie and Terry work long hours making sure everything is prepped, cooked and served perfectly to their hungry customers.

They put customer satisfaction over profit margins and this level of dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.

Annmarie, who is 41 and has lived in Winsford all her life, said: “We are the people you will find at the shop every hour it’s open from prepping, cooking and serving the food.

“We offer traditional fish and chips and proper, old fashioned peas as well as Holland’s pies, fishcakes and burgers with kids’ meals and daily specials on Fridays.

“Our fish and chips are very reasonably priced at £7 and we have sides of peas, curry sauce and gravy.”

But what do the customers think of The Corner Fish and Chip Shop? Why do they think it deserves to win our latest title?

Happy regulars say this is “excellent quality food and good service” and the business comes “highly recommended”.

The shop is open over lunchtime (11.30am until 2pm) and teatime (4.30pm until 7.30pm) Tuesday to Friday and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, which gives Annmarie and Terry the perfect work / life balance.

Annmarie added: “When we first took on the business, we were working six days a week but since the pandemic we decided that having a healthy balance is more important.

“We were totally overwhelmed when we found out we’d won this award – it means so much to us.

“We have so many customers who have been coming to us since we first opened.

“They come on a weekly basis and very often order the same meal.

“We like to welcome new customers to the shop as well, those who are new to the area or who have found us on the internet.

“We would like to thank each and every one of our customers who took the time to nominate The Corner Fish and Chip Shop for this award and then vote for us to win.

“Your support and loyalty mean everything to us and we are very grateful for your continued custom.”

But what about the burning question – do Annmarie and Terry still enjoying eating fish and chips after cooking thousands of portions over the years?

Annmarie said: “We don’t eat as many fish and chip suppers as we used to as we enjoy cooking other things at home but we do enjoy the occasional fish and chip meal as a treat!”

Homemade specials on the menu each Friday can include chilli, chicken curry, minced beef with onion gravy and salt and pepper chilli chicken – all of which come with chips.
