THE family and friends of a man whose life was cut short by mental health troubles and substance use are embarking on a daunting challenge.

Steve Green will cycle 100 miles in memory of his son Ryan, who died in August 2023.

Before his death, Rudheath resident Ryan had been supported by the mental health charity Via, who run the New Beginnings service in Northwich – offering support to people struggling with alcohol and drug use.

Determined to make a difference in his son’s memory, Ryan’s friends and family have raised £5,000 for Via.

Steve said: “Ryan sadly died in August 2023, despite help and support from Via and family he was unable to navigate a way through his illness.

“Ryan was and still is a much-loved son, brother and family member, he is missed every minute of every day. The loss is profound.

“Via continue with dedication and professionalism to support people like Ryan who struggle daily in the face of social stigma with their illnesses.

“Since Ryan's death, Via has continued to support me and Ryan's mum throughout our grief and for this we are eternally grateful.”

The Ford-sponsored RideLondon-Essex 100-mile bike ride takes place on Sunday (May 26).

Steve will be joined by Ryan’s cousin Chris and his friend Kevin.

The group set out to raise £2,000 for Via but thanks to the support of 110 supporters, they have gone above and beyond that, raising £5,000 so far.

This money will help support the charity’s Northwich hub, which offered support and guidance to Ryan and continue to support his family.

Dave Targett, area director at Via said: “I know Ryan’s death has been felt deeply by his family and friends who loved him very much.

“By taking this opportunity to raise awareness of the complex support needs associated with substance misuse, they are doing a great thing, and they remind us that society has a responsibility to care for those who need help.

“I give my very deepest condolences, not only to Ryan’s family but to every person affected by the death of a friend or family member, and my thanks to Ryan’s family and their sponsors for helping us to continue to support those with similar challenges in life.”
