WINSFORD’s town mayor has addressed residents with a special Christmas message.

On behalf of himself and the town council, Cllr Ernie Welch reflected on the community value of several events which have taken place in Winsford since he came to office in May, including Winsford’s first ever Pride festival on September 9.

He also praised staff and students and Hebden Green School after he attend a moving performance of its sign language choir, and thanked singer teacher and Winsford's own X-Factor sensation, Sophie Bond Kemsley, whose students performed at this year’s Mayor’s Christmas carol service at St Chad’s Church on Swanlow Lane.

Cllr Welch also took the opportunity to call for unity, reminding people only working together will bring about positive changes in the community.

He said: “As Mayor of Winsford, I would like to say since May, it has been a real rollercoaster of a journey.

“But I’d like to say how extremely proud and privileged I’ve felt when carrying out my mayoral duties.

“The Salt Fair, Winsford Pride, and the Delamere Street Festival, to name but a few, were all extremely positive events for our community, and were enjoyed by a great many people.

“Another thing which has really stuck with me is my visit to Hebden Green School to watch their Vivo signing choir perform.

“In the run up to Christmas, Sophie Bond Kemsley brought her hugely talented singing school of young musicians to my Christmas carol concert at St Chad’s Church, where there was ability on show in abundance.

“My nominated charity for my year in office is St Luke’s Hospice, and I must mention how impressed I’ve been with the absolutely wonderful and dedicated team of people they have working there.

“Trying to improve things in our town is proving challenging.

“However, if we, as a council, can try to work as a team in the coming months, I’m sure we will eventually make some real progress.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Winsford a Merry Christmas, and a bright and prosperous New Year.”
