AN update has been provided on flood defence measures in Northwich following the arrival of Storm Babet.

It was confirmed on Friday afternoon that phase one of the town’s flood defence plan had been activated following a flood alert and warning being issued.

This saw large pumps deployed to Barons Quay and Dock Road pumping stations and demountable flood barriers erected.

Phase two was expected to commence overnight on Friday, which would see flood defences fully deployed, and this went ahead as planned.

Now, the Environment Agency has confirmed that phase two measures have been stood down, with phase one remaining in place as a precaution.

A spokesman said: “With river levels lowering in Northwich, we are removing phase two of the defences.

“Phase one will remain in place as a precautionary measure to keep communities protected.

“Check your flood risk and sign up for warnings at gov.uk.”

The flood alert for the River Weaver catchment area, which remains in force, reads: “River levels have peaked but remain high on the River Weaver following Storm Babet.

“Areas most at risk include low-lying land and roads around the rivers Weaver, Ducklow and Wheelock and their tributaries.

“No further rainfall is forecast. Our incident rooms are open and we are closely monitoring the situation.

“Avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses, and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

“This message will be updated as the situation changes.”

Meanwhile, the flood warning for the River Weaver at Acton Bridge and Weaverham states: “River levels have peaked and are coming down. No further rain is forecast for today.

“Please be aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with the current situation.

“We will keep monitoring weather forecast and will update this message as the situation changes.”
