AN update has been provided on flood defence systems being implemented in Northwich.
It comes amid rising river levels and heavy rain brought on by the arrival of Storm Babet across the UK.
It was confirmed yesterday afternoon, Friday that phase one of the flood defence plan had been activated.
This saw large pumps deployed to Barons Quay and Dock Road pumping stations and demountable flood barriers erected.
Phase two was expected to commence overnight, which will see flood defences fully deployed, and Leftwich councillor Andrew Cooper has confirmed this went ahead as planned.
In an update this morning, Saturday, he said: “Phase two deployed overnight as expected, and the Dane Bridge on London Road is now closed.
“However, everything has gone according to plan. The flood defences have held, the extra over-pumping capacity is working and the town centre is dry.
“Huge thanks to the Environment Agency, United Utilities, Cheshire West and Chester Council and police staff who have put a shift in overnight keeping the pumps going.
“The Dane Bridge on London Road will stay closed until the river level has dropped but Waitrose remains open, as does the rest of the town centre.
“Traffic is backing up on London Road already, so if you are not going to Waitrose, I suggest using Winnington, Castle or Rudheath routes into town.
“Officers will be on site until the flood warning is rescinded.”
