A NEW councillor has been elected in Winsford.

Dene residents went to the polls as a Winsford Town Council by-election was held on Thursday (October 5).

In the end it was the Labour Party’s candidate, Dave Moorcroft, who came out on top with over 43 per cent of the vote.

“I’m delighted to have been elected by Dene residents to Winsford Town Council,” said the newly elected councillor.

“I made five achievable commitments during this election campaign but the most important of all is my promise to be a dependable councillor for all Dene residents.

“Thanks to all who took part in the election, and thanks most of all to the voters for their faith in me.”

The by-election was held following the resignation of Christina Smith just three months after her election.

Mrs Smith was one of 14 Winsford Salt of the Earth members to win a seat at May’s election.

This success meant the independent group, former earlier this year, claimed all but one seat on the council, with Labour’s Nathan Pardoe holding on to his seat representing the Wharton ward.

Mrs Smith then resigned at the start of August, triggering the by-election.

Councillor Moorcroft narrowly edged victory with 171 votes, ahead of Salt of the Earth’s David Winsford who managed 160 votes.

During his campaign councillor Moorcroft pledged to "defend free school milk, support community events, improve parks and play areas, battle land banking, and be a dependable councillor".

Also in the running was Salt of the Earth’s Simon Boone (30 votes) and Anthony Broughton (33 votes).
