FIGHTERS from Northwich gyms are celebrating successes this summer.
Mikey Doran won gold at the Olympic-style Manchester Box Cup, which attracted boxers from all over Europe.
The 16-year-old, who started the sport around eight years ago, trains with Frank Collins at Boxing Fit Academy in Works Lane, where he has won the boxer of the year trophy.
His achievement in Manchester came in the open class 58kg 2007 category, by beating Harry Howson from Moss Side Fire Station Boxing Club by unanimous decision in the final.
Doran has other competitions in the pipeline this year, including the Emerald Box Cup in Ireland later this month, the Baram Box Cup in September and the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs Championships.
Superbox Northwich CIC brothers Thomas and Jimmy Jr Evans also got among the medals at the Manchester Box Cup.
Thomas, 10, won gold in the 32kg 2013 category, while Jimmy, 13, claimed silver in the 52kg 2009 class.
Steve Bunby, owner of Superbox CIC based at Supergym Combat Sports Academy on the Winnington Hall Industrial Estate, is delighted with the achievements of ‘lovely lads who are a good support for each other.’
He said: “These two lads have done skills and not had a bout until this, so I think it’s a brilliant achievement.
“Thomas boxed well behind his jab, produced great movement and got a second-round stoppage.
“Jimmy Jr got beat on points against the national champion in a close fight. Considering it was his first open bout Jimmy boxed well.”
Their clubmate Bella Dempsey continued her outstanding progress when she delivered a second tournament triumph in six weeks.
The 14-year-old, a a student at County High School, Leftwich, has added the Riviera Box Cup title to her Midland Box Cup success in June.
She defeated Lexi Miller in the 60kg 2008 category in Torquay.
“That’s her fourth bout and she’s won two Box Cups and a bronze in the nationals this year, which I think is pretty incredible,” said Bunby.
“The girl she boxed had a lot more experience and she won on unanimous decision which is brilliant in my book.”
Beginners’ classes are being run by Superbox CIC at Rudheath Academy on Tuesdays.
Superbox would like to hear from any businesses who can offer support.
