A LANDLADY has celebrated one year in charge of a popular Winsford pub, having only meant to stay for a few weeks.
Angie Uren took over the Red Lion last year with her husband Robin, initially planning to do so for just six weeks.
However, the 55-year-old says that despite the challenges thrown her way, she just couldn’t bear to leave.
“The Red Lion was only meant to be for six weeks but we just couldn’t give it up,” she said.
“Even though we had the major floods at Christmas time, the whole of the team, along with Jenni O’Grady and Neil Dawson from Punch Pubs (the chain the Red Lion is a part of), pulled out all the stops to get it open for Christmas Eve.
“That’s when we decided we were going to sign for the next five years.”
Angie has been in the trade for nearly four decades, having gone to catering college to qualify as a chef when she was just 16-years-old.
She took over her first pub down in Devon in 1999 and has gone on to manage four more since then.
Angie has been overwhelmed by the support shown by the local community since she arrived on August 1, 2022.
She is already planning for the next year at the helm.
“The Red Lion is supported by the town of Winsford and we can’t thank them enough for the welcome we have had,” Angie said.
“We have plans for another Lion Fest next year. The one we did this Easter was absolutely amazing.
“The Red Lion is known for live music and this is something we continued and have built on.”
The one-year anniversary isn’t the only cause for celebration this week either.
Angie has also been nominated for Punch Pubs’ Regional Publican of the Year Award.
“The whole team have got us the nomination for publican of the year through hard work and the love of the Red Lion,” Angie added.
“Thank you to all the team for their hard work and to our customers for your continued support.”
