IF you’ve ever thought it would be fun grow your own fruit and vegetables, then Winsford is the place for you this weekend.
Over Allotments and Leisure Gardeners’ Association are holding their annual Open Day on Saturday, July 15, which marks their 99th anniversary and promises to be informative and fun for all the family.
As well as being a great opportunity to learn about what it takes to grow your own produce, there will also be activities for kids, including a bug hunt, hook a duck, splat the rat, hoopla, and jar pong.
There will also be stalls selling cakes, home produce such as preserves, vegetables from the allotments, and afternoon teas and coffees.
Lower Moss Wood wildlife hopsital will also be there with some of their majestic birds of prey, and Helping Winsford Paw will be running a tombola to raise money for some of the town’s needy feline residents.
The open day is also when the club's annual awards are presented, including the Dempster Cup, which is Winsford's oldest community cup, and is awarded for the best allotment plot.
Over Allotments head beekeeper and committee member, Rebecca Edwards, said: “We’re trying to create a really nice open day for the people of Winsford and surrounding areas. We're conscious of keeping the cost down and making it all about the community.
“It’s also a perfect opportunity for people to come and look around the allotment plots and see what it’s all about.
“I remember when I was on the waiting list and I was so keen to get a plot. When I went to the open day, it gave me such a buzz.
“It made me even more eager, because I was able to go on to people’s plots and have a look around. I could see what they were growing and what they were doing, and it just made me so excited at the prospect.
“From then on in, I just couldn’t wait.”
The open day runs from 10am to 4pm, at Over Allotments in Moss Bank, and everyone is welcome.
