WORK on Northwich's long-awaited state-of-the-art skatepark is set to begin next week.

Construction of the new facility, replacing the old one in Vickersway Park which has become harder to maintain, will start on Monday, June 26.

The build is expected to take around nine to 10 weeks to complete, which will culminate more than 18 months of work to bring the project to fruition.

During that time, Northwich Town Council has worked with partners to secure funding for the skatepark, which will cost around £180,000.

Town mayor Cllr Jane Thomas is excited for work to begin and is looking forward to seeing the community enjoy facility for many years to come.

She said: "The commencement of the skatepark construction is a monumental moment for our community.

"This facility will provide a safe and engaging environment for our young people to develop their skateboarding skills and promote an active lifestyle.

"I cannot wait to witness the joy it will bring to our town."

The building of the facility has been entrusted to Wheelscape, an experienced skatepark construction company.

Funding for the project came from a £100,000 FCC Communities Foundation grant, a £30,000 donation from Rudheath and Witton Together and £16,000 from Cheshire West and Chester Council.
