The Winsford fish and chip shop that's battering the competition

The couple, who run The Corner Fish and Chip Shop in Winsford, have been crowned Mid Cheshire’s Best for Fish and Chips 2023 after the venue battered the competition from nine other fish and chip plaices.

Each week, we will be searching for the best Mid Cheshire has to offer in different categories.

Oliver Gibney Hairdressing took the first Best of 2023 title – Best for Hair in Mid Cheshire – and Ka Pie is officially Best for Pies with Samantha Dean Nails and Makeup being crowned Best for Nails.

The Red Lion in Little Budworth is Best for Roast Dinner, Grape and Bean was announced as Best for Cocktails, Kanya Bistro and Bar is Best for Breakfast.

Simon Daniels took last week’s Best for Fitness award.

Voting for Mid Cheshire’s Best for Tattoos is currently taking place and we’re also looking for nominations in our latest search - Best for Pizza.

Next on the menu was fish and chips and The Corner Fish and Chip Shop served up a winning portion of the English favourite, taking our latest Best of 2023 title.

The Corner Fish and Chip Shop first opend its doors in 1965

Annmarie and Terry, who have been together for 24 years, have been the proud owners of The Corner Fish and Chip Shop on Princess Street for the past 15 years, with the venue first opening in 1965.

Annmarie, who is 40 and has lived in Winsford all her life, said: “We are the people you will find at the shop every hour it’s open from prepping, cooking and serving the food.

“We offer traditional fish and chips and proper, old fashioned peas as well as Holland’s pies, fishcakes and burgers with kids’ meals and daily specials on Fridays.

“Things proved to be very difficult during the Covid-19 pandemic and now we’re having to manage massive increases in gas and electric as well as stock prices for fish, potatoes and oils.

“We’re trying our best to provide the people of our town with good quality food at affordable prices, which means our profit margins aren’t as high as they used to be.

“We would rather have a large, happy customer base.”

But what do the customers think of The Corner Fish and Chip Shop? Why do they think it deserves to win the latest Best of title?

Recommendations say this is “the best tasting chips as everything is fresh”.

Another said: “I’d recommend this place to anyone.”

The shop is open over lunchtime and teatime Tuesday to Friday and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, which gives Annmarie and Terry “the perfect work / life balance”.

Annmarie added: “When we first took on the business, we were working six days a week but since the pandemic we decided that having a healthy balance is more important.

“We were totally overwhelmed when we found out we’d won this award – it means so much to us.

“Huge thanks to everyone who voted for us – your support and regular custom is very much appreciated.”

The Corner Fish and Chip Shop is closed this week but will be reopening on Tuesday, June 20 with some new special offers to celebrate winning Best for Fish and Chips 2023.
