AS we reflect on the recent local elections, it’s timely to acknowledge the significance of our democratic process.

People across England, including Cheshire, exercised the right to vote and chose representatives who will make decisions impacting their lives and families.

We are lucky to live in a country where citizens can make their voices heard.

Of course, our democracy could always be enhanced, but there are many parts of the world denied this basic human right.

As a Labour MP, I am naturally pleased my party did well.

Locally, we secured an overall majority at Cheshire West and Chester Council and delivered a Labour team for Northwich.

Nationally, we became the largest party in local government.

However, regardless of party, spare a thought for those councillors who did not retain their wards.

Public service involves personal sacrifice, and it is only right we acknowledge their contribution.

Here in Northwich, I am delighted voters once again placed their confidence in community stalwarts Andrew Cooper and Sam Naylor, who were re-elected as councillors for Leftwich and Witton respectively.

The departure of husband-and-wife councillor team Bob and Kate Cernik, who stepped down to enjoy semi-retirement, created an opportunity for Felicity Davies and Arthur Neil to put themselves forward to represent Winnington and Castle.

Their hard work on the campaign trail was rewarded.

And a big shout-out to Olywn Dean who took her Rudheath ward from the Conservatives in a tremendous victory.

With power comes responsibility.

Having been elected as Labour, I know my colleagues will serve as Labour; promoting a fairer, more inclusive, green agenda while championing the areas they serve in the council chamber, fighting for resources and raising the profile of our town.

There is much work to be done in Northwich, with ongoing projects we need to see through to delivery.

That includes the regeneration of Weaver Square, supporting the High Street, the library revamp, the redevelopment of Moss Farm, and arguing, with my support, for the funding of a new Winnington bridge to unlock regeneration in the area.

We also need a fully accessible main railway station.

I will continue to work tirelessly in Parliament and in our community, alongside my councillor colleagues, to ensure Northwich gets the investment and attention it deserves.

And I truly hope Labour’s local election success augurs well for the general election to come.
