Ten tasty pies in Mid Cheshire made the shortlist for Best for Pies with Ka Pie in Holmes Chapel taking the coveted title.
Hayden Parsons is the owner of the business, which has been open for less than 12 months.
The New Zealander from Upper Hutt launched Ka Pie in July last year from his home in Holmes Chapel.
The name Ka Pie comes from the Maori term ‘ka pie’ meaning good job or well done and Hayden specialises in original pie flavours as well as British classics.
He posts on his Facebook page each Sunday morning at 8am with the week’s special pies and customers can place orders for collection the following Saturday.
Hayden said: “I got homesick for a classic New Zealand mince and cheese pie.
“I put a photo on Facebook and friends and family kept saying that I should sell them.
“So, six weeks later, I did!”
Hayden has spent 20 years working in kitchens at international airports, Chinese restaurants, pubs and pizza places, starting out as a pot washer and graduating to sous chef and then head chef.
He currently sells stoves and pie-making is a hobby.
Hayden said: “I have a passion for bringing a little taste of home to my local community.
“In New Zealand, anything belongs in a pie and I wanted to bring these weird and wonderful flavours to England.
“Even the British classics are made with a New Zealand twist.”
But what do the pastry-filled offerings at Ka Pie taste like?
One happy customer said Ka Pie makes “the best pies I’ve ever tasted” and another said they were looking forward to tasting the special coronation chicken pies which will be on the menu in honour of King Charles III’s coronation.
Hayden said: “Looking at the amazing line up of pies that made the shortlist, I was honoured just to be mentioned.
“I feel like I’ve succeeded in keeping a small part of my New Zealand heritage to my community.
“A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me by voting and recommending my business as well as all those people who have bought a pie from Ka Pie.”
