A number of candidates not affiliated with the larger political parties will be campaigning for votes in the upcoming Cheshire West and Chester local elections.

Residents across the borough will cast their vote next Thursday, May 4, with all 70 seats being contested across 45 council wards.

One of the candidates hoping to win support will be Alistair Nicholls, who will be running in Marbury for the Alliance for Democracy & Freedom Party.

An engineer by trade, the married farther-of-two previously served on Ipswich Borough Council and has lived in Comberbach for 15 years.

He said he wants to fight for a detailed programme and timetable for works at Soot Hill, 'oppose all expenditure on net zero and 15-minute cities', and spend any money saved on highway maintenance.

He said: “Our politics and systems of government are fundamentally broken, the UK needs to secure its independence and the freedom of its citizens.”

Running in Weaver & Cuddington as an Independent candidate is Gillian Edwards. She has been on the council for four years and has served as leader of the independent group.

She said: “I don’t believe that party politics has a place at local level and the last four years have proven that this approach works, working at the heart of communities with everyone to achieve the very best.

"I’m not interested in previous political battles, who achieved what and how much better or worse it was.  I’m interested in the here and now, working with residents to provide the very best possible, even in very challenging circumstances.”

This will be the first local government elections in Cheshire West and Chester since 2019.

Depending on their ward, residents will be able to choose from Labour, Conservative, Green, Liberal Democrat, Reform UK, Trade Unionist and Socialist, Alliance for Democracy and Freedom, as well as a number of independent candidates.
