AFTER months of training, two scouts from a Northwich group took part in a 40km hike.

Mathilda Jans and Tomas Dugard, both 13, are members of St Wilfrid’s Scout Group and recently took part in the 55th Cheshire Hike.

Cheshire Hike has been running since 1964 and thousands of young people across the county have participated.

This year, 700 young people took part across three categories; Pathfinder for 10-and-a-half to 12-and-a-half years, Pathfinder+ for under 14s and Explorer for 14 to 18-year-olds.

They have to walk between 30km and 60km depending on their section.

Mathilda and Tomas walked 40km carrying their own kit – which included a tent, food and equipment.

A spokesperson said: “They were scored on their abilities for navigation, equipment carried, camping and cooking, and timekeeping.

“There were 66 other teams in Pathfinder+ between sizes of two to five scouts or guides from across the county.

“The pair worked hard together and trained over several months to build up stamina and improve their skills.

“They both have been involved in scouting since the age of six with St Wilfrid’s Scout Group and moved through the sections - Beavers, Cubs, and now Scouts.

“St Wilfrid’s is based in the town centre and currently has 70-plus members.

“We are always looking for volunteers to support this great network of groups we have in the district, or if you would like your child to join go to cheshirescouts.org.uk/join.”
