A MINDFUL stitching club has been set up in Moulton to help people switch off, improve their mental health, and make new friends.

Hilary Belshaw started Scrapadoo in January 2020 in a converted barn at her home after renewing her love for sewing.

After three years in business, she is now firmly established in giving informal workshops for beginners and intermediates with a sewing machine.

And by using upcycled fabrics, it keeps the costs down for novices, while also saving fabric from going to landfill.

Hilary is aware many people are suffering from anxiety and loneliness following pandemic lockdowns and is she is keen to help the community at large – which is why she is introducing Mindful Monday Stitching Club.

Hilary said: “We can all feel overwhelmed by the relentless demands of the digital world; scrolling through social media, constantly checking apps and emails.

“Mindful practices are a wonderful way to get away from our mobile phones.

“Also, the concentration required can help calm the mind as the sewing, chat and unpicking is a great distraction.

“Being creative and creating something with your own hands can boost self-esteem and improves the sense of wellbeing.

“So, the idea for Mindful Monday Stitching Club was born.

“It will be held on the first Monday of the month – two sessions, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.”

Each session lasts an hour-and-a-half and will be run by Hilary or host, Rachel Hutchinson.

There will be a surprise hand sewing project to do, or, if you prefer, bring your own stitching to do.

The cost is £10 per session, which also includes tea/coffee and homemade cake.
