NORTHWICH Victoria manager Steve Wilkes was impressed with his side's performance against North West Counties League second-placed side Wythenshawe Town, despite drawing 0-0.

Vics’ strong display built on their 6-1 victory over Barnton in the Mid Cheshire FA Senior Cup semi-final in midweek.

The Trickies had chances to win the game. Ash Dunn had a one-on-one effort with the keeper blocked and Matt Dudley had a huge chance at the end to win it but was unable to hit the back of the net.

“I think it was a good game to watch. I know it was 0-0 but I think both sides tried to win it,” said Wilkes.

“We wanted to win the game, we’re the team behind them. I’m not saying they’ll be happy with the point but obviously it keeps us at arm’s length away from them so we’re disappointed we haven’t got the three points but they’re one of the best teams in the league.”

Wilkes was full of praise for goalkeeper Ryan Hamer, who made some important saves to keep Northwich in the game.

“Ryan Hamer’s made two brilliant saves for us and we missed two really good chances, so I think Ash Dunn and Matt Dudley won’t sleep tonight but they’re our two leading goal scorers.”

Hamer rescued his side in the second half, with one leaping save just edging an effort over the bar.

“Yeah it was just reactions really and luckily it’s gone over the bar,” said Hamer.

“It’s just confidence and after the game on Wednesday, I came into today feeling very confident and I’ve played well so I’m buzzing.

“I think the lads dug deep and played well and the back four was solid so I feel like we deserve the clean sheet in the end and the one point.”

Vics, sitting fifth on the ladder, play 20th-placed Longridge Town in the Premier Division on Wednesday at the U Lock It Stadium.
