A TALENTED teenager from our area looks like being one to watch in the world of freestyle wrestling.

Alfie Gallagher, who hails from Wincham, finished 2022 by distinguishing himself against competitors from all over Europe having already bested domestic rivals.

The 15-year-old was part of the Great Britain junior squad that went to Finland for the Helsinki International Freestyle Wrestling Open having already won at the English and British championships earlier this year.

The Rudheath Senior Academy pupil went on an excellent run by beating competitors from Northern Ireland, Sweden, Latvia and Denmark to reach the final.

Unfortunately, the gold medal proved elusive as he was beaten by a Finnish rival, but he can still feel proud at bringing home a silver medal.

It caps an excellent year for Gallagher, who trains six times a week to perfect his craft at gyms in Manchester and Congleton.

He is also making waves in Sambo – a Russian style of wrestling – and is the current British junior combat Sambo champion while he has also won titles in MMA and submission grappling.
