SCOOTER enthusiasts have teamed up to deliver hundreds of toys to a local children’s ward in time for Christmas.
Member of the South Cheshire Scooter Alliance, which is made up of scooter clubs from Winsford, Middlewich, Northwich, Crewe and Nantwich, met on Sunday, December 18, to take more than 400 toys to the children’s ward at Leighton Hospital.
Only four members of the Alliance were brave enough to ride their scooters due to dangerous icy road conditions, with others opting to travel by minibus.
Toys were donated by staff and students at Reaseheath College, Travis Perkins in Crewe, the Railway Hotel in Nantwich, the George and Dragon pub in Winsford, and the Coach and Horses in Crewe, as well as by members of the various scooter clubs.
Chairman of the South Cheshire Scooter Alliance, Keith Williams, said: “The clubs have held Toy Runs at Christmas for more than 20 years, but on an individual basis.
"The Alliance group was set up 18 months ago as a way of combining resources on our rides.
"This is the first year we have held our own combined Christmas Toy Run to keep it local within our own community.
"We are all likeminded people who enjoy the scooter scene, and riding out together in groups is a great way of socialising.
"We also enjoy being involved in our community, and we see the charity runs we do throughout the year as our way of giving something back to our community.”
"Staff at the hospital were overwhelmed by the volume we took with us.
"The children’s ward can have a weekly turnover of around 26 child patients, so we know there will be plenty to go around.
"A lot can be used in the day room for the children to play together."
