New anthem hopes to to spur England to World Cup victory

Knutsford musician Nigel Carr hopes his euphoric song will spur the nation's team to victory in Qatar.

The dad-of-four released his single just days before Harry Kane and the squad take on Iran in the opening game on Monday.

The 62-year-old is confident the Three Lions could lift the coveted trophy.

Nigel, from Mere, said: “I think we’ve got a fighting chance.

“If England won the World Cup, I’ll be running round the garden because I think everyone needs something to celebrate.”

Nigel, who runs a digital marketing company, described how the last World Cup four years ago inspired his song.

“It’s crazy,” he said.“It came to me in a dream.

“England was about to play Croatia, having got through to the semi-finals after beating Belgium 1-0.

“I had watched the game and was full of optimism.

“I went to sleep that night and dreamt of a song. Well, I had the chorus and it just kept whizzing round my head all night.

“I woke up with it still in my head, ran downstairs, grabbed my trusty guitar, and worked out the chorus.”

Nigel then wrote the verses which include every member of the current squad.

Sadly, his hope was crushed when the team was defeated.

“England were knocked out 26 hours later and that was the end of my song,” said Nigel.

“I put it on YouTube but I’m far too embarrassed to show that rough take now.”

Earlier this year, his song was revived when he played it for his friend Mike Bennett, a record producer, whose credits include Toyah Wilcox, Ian Brown, The Specials, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Fat White family.

Mike also wrote scripts for Frankie Howard and Rik Mayall and published 34 books.

“He was bowled over by the song,” said Nigel.

“We said ‘we’ve got to record it’ and the track started taking shape.”

The pair began hatching plans and assembled a collective of respected musicians into a 'star-studded northern supergroup' called My Beating Heart.

The song, with backing vocals recorded by children, is in aid of Child Bereavement UK.

This charity supports families through the loss of loved ones and is close to Nigel’s heart.

“My first grandson, Noah, died when he was only three weeks old, 14 years ago,” said Nigel.

“My daughter Rachael Halpern and son-in-law Nick were devastated.

“Nick has been running the London Marathon almost every year and puts his medal around Noah’s grave.”

Nigel hopes his anthem will now boost the hopes and dreams of the nation as England kick off their exciting journey.
