WINNINGTON Park first XV ended a run of seven defeats with an 18-12 home win against fellow league strugglers Broughton Park.
Park controlled the early part of the game with great lineout ball and strong drives. Benny Elliot kicked a penalty goal awarded for offside.
Indiscipline by Broughton gave Park opportunities and when they were again penalised for not rolling away at the ruck Elliot booted over another three points.
A pass from Chris Twigg to Charlie Hyde was intercepted which gifted Broughton an unconverted try on 19 minutes, but two tries before half time put Park in command.
Ross Morrin offloaded in a tackle to Jack England and quick ball from the ruck gave Justin Oles a great run to within five metres of the Broughton line. Hyde picked up from the ruck to score a converted try.
Then a lineout was taken cleanly by Matt Treacy and although the maul went to ground after being driven forward Park showed their power as Shaun Underdown crashed over on the sixth phase for 18-5.
An Elliot penalty shot went wide off a post and then the heavens opened.
An opportunity for a third try was missed with the final pass not going to hand on the left wing.
Park continued to pressure the Broughton line but errors thwarted any decent attack until Broughton’s second try on the short side in the 75th minute.
