A BOAT originally built in 1934 for the German Customs Service halted traffic in Northwich today, October 28, as the town’s swing bridges were opened to allow it to pass through.
Residents may have been able to spot the Duke of Normandy II on the River Weaver earlier today.
Posting on social media, the Canal and River Trust warned residents Winnington Swing Bridge would be closed to traffic from 10.30am.
Meanwhile, Northwich Town Swing Bridge would be closed at 11.30am.
The Duke of Normandy II, now owed by a local enthusiast in the town, has a long history and was taken over by the German Navy on the outbreak of the Second World War.
In more recent times, she was used on the Caledonian Canal to tow the gate-lifter barge around and in 1992 was bought by new owners in Crinan, Scotland.
She relocated to the River Weaver in 2018 after a further private sale.
