THE former Conservative MP for Northwich Graham Evans looks set to be given a seat in the House of Lords.
Reports today (Friday) suggest Mr Evans is among a number of new peers set to be created by Downing Street in the coming days.
Mr Evans represented Weaver Vale in the Commons from 2010-2017, when he was defeated by Labour's current incumbent Mike Amesbury.
Born in Poynton, he worked in manufacturing for 30 years before becoming an MP, and also served as a special police constable for four years. He had served for 10 years as a local councillor at Macclesfield Borough Council until it was abolished in 2009.
He was elected at the 2010 general election for the Conservatives with an 8.1% swing, replacing Labour's Mike Hall. He retained his seat in 2015 but was ousted in the snap general election two years later.
According the the Daily Telegraph, the list of 15 people nominated by the Conservatives to enter the Lords also includes four other ex Tory MPs - Stewart Jackson, Sir Hugo Swire, Angie Bray and Sir Nicholas Soames, along with former editor of the Daily Mail Paul Dacre and historian Andrew Roberts.
Mr Jackson was chief of staff to David Davis when he was Brexit secretary – whil Sir Nicholas, Winston Churchill’s grandson, was stripped of the Tory whip by Boris Johnson for opposing a no-deal Brexit.
Labour’s nominations for eight peerages include Ruth Smeeth, and former deputy leader Tom Watson. Former Northern Ireland First Minister Arlene Foster has also been nominated as a non-affiliated member of the Lords, rather than for her former party the DUP.
Two senior union figures, Frances O’Grady, head of the Trades Union Congress and Dave Prentis, former general secretary of Unison, have also been put forward.
This round of political peerages also look set to be followed by a host more when former PM Boris Johnson announces his resignation honours shortly.
Others on the Conservative list include the director of the think-tank Politeia, Sheila Lawlor, and former civil servant and economist Ruth Lea.
Sharon Taylor, the leader of Stevenage council, Sonny Leong, the co-founder of SME for Labour, and London deputy mayor for fire and resilience Fiona Twycross also look set to be made Labour peers.
Mr Evans could not be reached for further comment.
