A council depot in Winsford town centre will close its gates for the last time this week.
Phoenix House, on Clough Lane, has been an important hub for many of Cheshire West and Chester’s (CWAC) services for decades.
Services which are currently operating out of the site will be relocated elsewhere in the town.
Work to demolish the site’s existing building will soon begin, making way for developer Equans to build 100 new mixed-tenure family homes on the site.
The new homes will be a mix of affordable rents, shared ownership, and open market sale options.
At a Winsford Town Council meeting last month, Cllr Stuart Bingham said: “These are not £500,000 four and five-bedroom houses.
“These are modest dwellings, for Winsford has a real need.”
The cost of clearing the site will be met by CWAC with funds secured from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities’ Brownfield Land Release Fund.
The fund provides capital funding for land repurposing and small-scale infrastructure to local authorities across England, to bring otherwise unviable local authority-owned sites forward for housing and self and custom build plots.
The release of public sector land for housing is one of the government’s priorities to boost the supply of new homes, supporting the government’s ambition to deliver 300,000 homes per year.
