A DEVELOPMENT of 46 family homes in Winsford is nearing completion, transforming the former Greedy Pig site which was derelict for almost 10 years.
The new homes from housing association Weaver Vale Housing Trust are made up of 10 houses and 36 flats on a close just off New Road, which the River Weaver runs behind, and are available for affordable rent.
The Gredy Pig building was demolished in 2013 and the land has been vacant ever since.
While the modern terraced and semi-detached houses each have their own garden, the apartment block shares a communal green area.
The trust is making the most of the quiet, riverside location of the scheme by encouraging wildlife – with nesting boxes for swifts and sparrows throughout the grounds and a ‘hedgehog highway’.
Eddisbury MP Edward Timpson CBE QC, has praised the new development
He said: “As Winsford continues to transform into a vibrant, attractive, and outward-facing town, I am delighted to see our brownfield sites being redeveloped into high quality housing.
“This project shows the Government’s commitment to affordable housing and is funded in part by the Government’s £5.2 billion package of investment through Homes England.
“This new neighbourhood will help bring more jobs and investment into Winsford as we recover from the pandemic.”
Wayne Gales, chief executive of Weaver Vale Housing Trust, said: “We're excited to welcome more families to Winsford with the completion of these homes.
“They are further examples of our promise to provide high-quality and affordable homes for local people – all the more important in the current cost-of-living crisis.
"What's more, the New Road community is bringing a beautiful riverside location back into use for the benefit of local people.
“It all comes back to the trust’s wider commitment to building back fairer to tackle inequalities in our area.”
Richard Harrison, managing director at Lane End Group, added: “It is extremely satisfying to see the first phase of our New Road project near its completion.
“Our partnership with Weaver Vale Housing Trust has transformed a site which offered very little to the surrounding community, into a development of quality, modern housing for affordable rent in Winsford.
“We are delighted to continue our partnership with Weaver Vale Housing Trust, which will continue to add further value to the local community as the second phase of the project commences.”
