A COUNCILLOR has moved to allay public concerns after flood-prevention pumps installed at Barons Quay were removed.
Capacity was increased at two town centre pumping stations in November last year in a bid to provide the town with additional protection during the winter months.
Three additional pumps were installed at Barons Quay and the same were added to the Dock Road pumping station – with Hydrology experts saying at the time they would be enough to prevent another flood like the one caused by Storm Christoph in January 2021.
However, the pumps came at a considerable expense to hire - with estimates suggesting the amount paid out so far to be in excess of £200k – so they have been removed for the summer months, when the risk of flooding is at its lowest.
Cllr Andrew Cooper, who sits on Cheshire West and Chester Councils (CWAC) Flood Risk Action Group (FLAG) said discussions are ongoing about replacing them this winter.
He said: “The temporary over-pumping capacity of an additional 1000 litres per second was on hire from November to April at considerable expense.
"The final amount hasn't been confirmed yet is expected to be £209k.
"These costs are being shared equally between CWAC, United Utilities (UU) and the Environment Agency (EA).
“These pumps were returned for the summer as the risk of them being required is considerably lower.
“The 1000 litres per second capacity will be going back in for this winter, but it may not be precisely the same pumps.
“I understand the configuration of this year's pumps made it awkward for UU to access the site.
“There are discussions ongoing with both UU and EA on the best alternative that still meets the 1000 l/sec required but is easier to manage.
“This is something the CWAC and FRAG is monitoring.
“I hope this clarifies things and sets minds at ease.”
Further details about the flood prevention plans and the overall costs of the project will be presented to CWAC at a cabinet meeting in September.
