PLANS for another 80 homes in Middlewich have been revealed.

Developers Russell Homes have submitted plans to Congleton Borough Council for the housing development, which is believed to include at least 30 per cent affordable housing, on brown field land off Jersey Way.

But town mayor and borough councillor Paul Edwards says that Middlewich's already buckling infrastructure would struggle to cope with yet more homes.

"We have enough places in schools, but the biggest thing is the traffic increase. The town will be grid locked and nobody will be able to get in or out to work."

He said: "The vehicles will just keep increasing and we are looking to get more and more until the bypass is built to sort it out. The Government always says that there are not enough houses, but if they are going to build houses they need to build infrastructure."

Residents in Jersey Way are said to be upset by the plans.

Clr Edwards added: "A lot of the residents are upset because they thought they were living in a cul-de-sac, but now it's opening up into a bigger thing."

Richard House, local planning and economic policy manager at Congleton Borough Council, said: "Housing is needed across the borough as a whole. We are trying to distribute it reasonably between the towns."
