THE project to rebuild Northwich train station has taken a step forward after plans were submitted to the council.
A little more than 12 months ago, on May 18, 2021, part of the roof collapsed at the town's station building, which dates back to the 1800s.
Thankfully no-one was injured during the incident as rubble fell onto the station platform and in one of the waiting rooms.
Now Network Rail is seeking planning approval from Cheshire West and Chester Council to undertake the work to restore the building off Manchester Road.
In the application, a Network Rail spokeswoman said: "A structural collapse occurred at Northwich station on May 18, 2021.
"Network Rail propose to re-construct the southwestern end of the station building to a similar footprint and appearance as the original structure.
"The proposed reconstruction will be of a similar design to the original construction, but will reduce the height of the front elevation gable feature."
Calls had been previously made to use the rebuild as an opportunity to make Northwich station more accessible.
However the Government indicated because the footbridge, which is currently inaccessible to those in wheelchairs or with prams, was not impacted by the collapse, it does not qualify as part of the rebuild.
Network Rail and the council are continuing to work on securing an access for all grant to improve accessibility at the station.
