Police make arrests at illegal car meet in Morrisons car park

Last Saturday (May 14) at around 9.30pm police responded to calls from concerned residents relating to an illegal car meet that began in Widnes and then travelled across the county to Northwich and Winsford.

Officers, from Local Policing Units and the Roads Policing Unit, worked together to close roads and target ringleaders.

Police are reviewing footage and will prosecute several drivers due to their manner of driving.

Inspector Steve Griffiths said: “There is no question that illegal car meets cause a lot of upset and anxiety to local communities.

“They can bring harm to other motorists and even to people participating – so when we are made aware of such unauthorised gatherings we will take robust action and use every resource available to us to disrupt these illegal events.

“It takes a lot of resources to bring these gatherings under control and keep everyone safe. They take officers away from dealing with genuine emergencies – life and death situations.

“We have no tolerance for these events and we are not here to spoil fun but the fact of the matter is, we cannot allow cars to be driven at ridiculous speeds or in an anti-social manner.

“Those we have dealt with and continue to deal with, will feel the full force of the law and I make no apologies for that. We have a job to do in making Cheshire’s roads safer and anyone who is looking to disrupt that will be prosecuted.”

It was residents living in Winsford who made calls to the police after the cars began to gather in the car park of the Morrisons supermarket.

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, posted on Facebook: “There were reports last weekend of a car meet taking place at Morrisons.

“Thank you to the police for their work in combating this form of anti-social behaviour.”
