The new commander of policing in Northwich and Winsford has pledged to 'be robust in responding to those intent on doing harm'.

Chief Inspector Stuart York has replaced outgoing commander Gary Smith, who will be taking up a role as the Halton Area Commander.

Dad-of-three Stuart worked as a sergeant in Northwich in the 2000s and returns to the area now to take charge of the Local Policing Unit alongside Inspector Jason Murray and Detective Inspector Liam Furlong.

He said: “Fifteen years ago, I was a sergeant at Northwich and I know the area and many of the police officers that work here well.

“I am proud to join the incredibly hard working team here serving the people of Northwich and Winsford.

“I am determined to make sure the officers here respond quickly when we are needed and provide the best possible service to keep the area safe.

“My team will be robust in our response to those intent on causing harm, and will not let up in our drive to protect and safeguard children and those that are vulnerable.”

Since joining Cheshire Police in 1998, Stuart has worked in a number of positions including a Response Inspector at Crewe, a Partnerships Inspector and an Operational Support Inspector.

Most recently he served as a detective inspector at Police Headquarters and was there for five years.

His focus was on public protection and digital forensics, leading a team that investigates child abuse and safeguards victims.

While in public protection, he has been the force lead for child death, ensuring that when a child sadly dies the response, support and investigation by the police and our partners is of the highest level.

He also has the role of being a hostage and crisis negotiator where he manages a team of negotiators, and in 2017 he was deployed as mutual aide to Manchester following the Manchester Arena bomb explosion.

Outside of work, Stuart enjoys watching his two boys playing football and his daughter dancing as well as getting outside to do his mountain climbing.
