A GROUP of students will be rowing a million metres in just 24 hours to raise funds for the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital charity (LHCH).
The students, who attend The Grange School in Hartford were inspired by last year’s successful 24-hour row that helped the school to raise an amazing £4,500 for LHCH.
This year they want to take the challenge even further and that means completing a rowing marathon.
To reach the ‘Million Metre’ milestone the students will be rowing 6km every four hours starting at 8am on Saturday morning (March 19).
They will be rowing all day and right throughout the night before finishing up at 8am the following morning.
A million metres works out at an incredible 622 miles – the equivalent of rowing from Hartford to Zurich in Switzerland in just one day.
Year 13 student Ben Scawn is a great supporter of the charity and said: "Following on from our success last year, and knowing how much of a difference our sponsorship money made to people living with heart and lung disease we were determined to try and make it bigger and better this year.
"I have seen the immense pressure LHCH have been under during the pandemic and I just wanted to do something to support them.
"Thankfully, students across the school agreed and this time we really wanted to do something even more challenging.
"We are already looking forward to it, even the blisters!"
Kat Huntriss, head of the upper sixth form at The Grange School, said: "I am so proud of the students for doing this amazing challenge, yet again.
"I know the amount of hard work and effort that went into it last time.
"Not just during the 24-hour challenge but the hours and hours of training prior to it, and even after that there were still a lot of sore hands and aching limbs at the end of it.
"For the students to go even further this time is truly inspiring."
