VIGILS have been held in Northwich and Winsford to show support for Ukraine.
The vigils – which attracted countless Cheshire West residents standing in solidarity – were held at Barons Square in Northwich and Winsford's town centre war memorials at 5.30pm yesterday, Friday.
Both town councils wanted to provide a way for their communities to come together and show unity for the people of Ukraine.
Northwich Town Council posted: “Moving scenes this evening as residents of Northwich joined us for a vigil in solidarity with Ukraine.
“Mayor of Northwich, Sam Naylor welcomed supporters and expressed his pride in seeing so many residents turn out against a senseless war.
“Mike Amesbury MP spoke alongside other community leaders, pledging their support to the people of Ukraine.”
After the event, Mike Amesbury said: “Northwich turned out in force tonight at the vigil in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
“In the crowd was a family from the capital Kyiv that I'm proud to say my team and I helped to escape from the war by securing visas.
“I spoke along with other community leaders who all want Putin to cease his barbaric invasion so that peace can once again return to Ukraine.”
Winsford Town Council also posted following the vigil.
A statement read: “Thank you to everybody who attended tonight’s peace rally.
“Winsford stood with Ukraine and all victims of war.”
Meanwhile, Mayor of Winsford Nathan Pardoe said: “Thank you to everybody who attended tonight's peace rally.
“Winsford, Chester, Ellesmere Port and Northwich stood with Ukraine and all victims of war.
“Winsford’s response to the invasion has demonstrated the best of our town - kindness, generosity and solidarity.
"Thanks also to Winsford residents for their generosity - £343 was raised for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal which is match-funded by the Government."
