YOUNG people from Mid Cheshire have been busy raising funds for a trip of a lifetime to the World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) in South Korea next summer.

The Scouts, all from Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich, have to raise nearly £40,000 in order to attend this unique event – involving 40,000 scouts from across the world for 12 days of activities, learning about cultures and taking action on global issues.

The WSJ is open to scouts aged 14-17 and happens every four years, each time hosted by a different country.

The Mid Cheshire Scouts recently received support from Nationwide Building Society in Northwich, who agreed to sell raffle tickets to customers and hold a cake sale in the branch at the weekend.

Nationwide branch manager, Ali Bryan-King said: “When I was approached to support the Scouts’ fundraising efforts, I immediately said yes.

“It’s brilliant to be able to support these young people from our local community to achieve their fundraising target and I can’t wait to hear about their adventures when they return from the World Scout Jamboree.”

Nationwide have so far helped the Scouts raise £281.86 through holding the raffle, cake sale and selling books and teddies at the Northwich branch, with further support to follow.

Mid Cheshire Scout Daniel, aged 15, said: “We are really grateful to Ali and her team for supporting us and I’m really excited about going to the World Scout Jamboree.

“All the Scouts and our mums and dads have been busy organising lots of other fundraising activities including a quiz night and a market stall selling homemade crafts."

Darren Gorst, district commissioner of Mid Cheshire Scouts added: “In previous years, our young people have been able to attend the WSJ with the generous support of businesses and individuals from the local community.

“By supporting their fundraising efforts they’ll be ensuring these young people achieve their goal and make the most of this fantastic, once in a lifetime opportunity.”
