POLICE have slammed the unacceptable driving of motorists who were monitored speeding on Townfield Lane in Barnton close to a junior school and library.
Now drivers are to face a clampdown on speeding following a survey organsied by Cheshire Police.
A week of monitoring traffic travelling on Townfield Lane revealed many motorists are consistently breaking the speed limit and consequently endangering those around them.
Sgt Peter Hough, who coordinates traffic enforcement explained the thinking behind carrying out the survey in the first place.
He said: "We decided to carry out the survey because of concerns raised by local residents at meetings with PSCO Diana Wiggins."
A device was installed which monitored the speed of every vehicle to pass it during a week in December.
Sgt Hough said: "The results are staggering. The road has a 30mph limit yet there are some drivers who were recorded at between 41-51mph. This is clearly unacceptable.
"Speed limits are there for a reason and in the case of Townfield Lane there is both a junior school and a library nearby. The excessive speed of some cars is simply beyond belief."
Sgt Hough warned drivers there would be nowhere to hide and said police would be clamping down on those who were breaking the law.
He added: "Needless to say we will now be directing roads policing officers and their colleagues to perform radar and speed checks along this road in order to catch and prosecute offenders."
