Within days of the frightening incident, in which thankfully nobody was hurt, the first priority was to get the station was back open for passengers.

As part of the work to make that possible, the main entrance to the building was partially destroyed to make it safe, including the iconic gable end.

Northwich councillors, including Andrew Cooper, Sam Naylor and Kate and Bob Cenik are now working with Mike Amesbury, the town's MP, to get the station rebuilt as the next priority.

They hope the original character of the Victorian-era station can be kept and maintained, with some good news being the original clock remained untouched by the collapse.

In his most recent statement to the Guardian, Chris Pye, Network Rail infrastructure director for the North West, said: "We thank passengers for their patience while we’ve been working to make Northwich station safe.

"The damaged building has been partially demolished and hoardings have been put up so the station could reopen to passengers.

"We’ll work with local groups when the time comes to rebuild.

"We await the findings of an independent investigation by our regulator the Office of Rail and Road into what caused the incident."
