NEWS broke last week about the new owner of the former Burton store seeking to restore the building to its former glory.

The Cheshire-based developer, who has chosen to remain anonymous at this stage, will also be taking advantage of the Townscape heritage scheme.

That should hopefully see the Witton Street building, which had been Burton since 1923, restored to something more like its old self.

While the news is positive in terms of investment in the town, when renovation works are completed, the space will need to be occupied by a suitable trader.

In recalling his memories of the building, Cllr Sam Naylor said he has such a strong association with it and that he would like to see it return to what it was like during his own youth and teenage years; a tailors, a record shop and a barbers.

So turning to a wish list of future shopping prospects, we asked readers for their thoughts on what they would like to see filling some of the empty units in and around the town centre.

Northwich town centre has been hit by closures but could there be brighter days ahead?

The comments were wide and varied, but the most common suggestion put forward was for the town to have its own Primark store.

Debbie Titterton started the ball rolling: "We could do with a Primark.

"A lot of people don't drive so it would be nice to have one in Northwich town."

The call for Primark was also made by Lisa Jane Edwards and Sonia Lewis, who also requested a Marks and Spencer food outlet and a Poundland.

Kimberley Tee also joined the clamour for the bargain fashion retailer: “Primark would be good, as would a full New Look (males/females/children).

“I don’t think we have many options here for children’s clothes.”

After the sad news that Elliot Footwear on the High Street will be closing after just over a year in business, another of our readers called for a more affordable children's shoe shop.

She said: "Asda and Matalan have been appalling for shoes for kids for months (not their fault, they can only sell what’s sent) as have Sainsbury’s to an extent.

"I can’t afford Clarks or that other shoe shop prices and I need to try on before I buy so online isn’t really an option."

Kelly Clews was also thinking about the town's younger generation when she suggested: "Bowling and arcade for kids.

"A good children and baby clothes shop

"Also a good clothes shop that caters for teenagers and young adults."

However, not everyone wants to see the empty units in the town filled with massive well known chains and brands.

Ali Marie said: "Less mass-produced, massive chain stores purchasing cheap clothing products made in factories with poor human rights, work conditions and ethics.

"Men in Sheds could also do with a venue to carry out their fantastic work.

"Make use of all the empty shops."

There was also call for Northwich to have its very own food hall like the one in Altrincham, while on the foodie theme, Les Young-Richards said he would like to see a nice deli with hams, olives and fresh artisan breads.
