NORTHWICH Rugby Club are gearing up for a return to action by their youngsters following this week’s easing of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.
An Easter special rugby taster takes place this Sunday at Moss Farm Sports Complex from 9.30am.
The first session back will be in line with all RFU guidance and there will be some “egg-citing” prizes for the best trainers as well as Easter related games and activities for the minis.
Under 12s coach Sam Naylor is hoping the return of rugby will put smiles back on people’s faces.
He said: “We’ll be looking to make the most of the months ahead.
“I’m glad lockdown is coming to an end because we only had our social media pages to keep them engaged!
“But the children and parents have been great. We did activity packs, rugby quizzes and a little Zoom training.
“The social side is really important and has been missed by many.”
And highlighting what he thinks the children have missed the most, he concluded: “Rugby and everything it stands for – not only playing but being at the club with their teammates through to watching the first team, helping out with the minis, ball-boying home games. You name it, they haven’t done it in ages.”
The return of rugby to Moss Farm will be ‘momentous’ according to under nines coach Chris Blower.
Training for all age groups in the Superstars Squads can resume from Sunday.
“Getting the players together will be fun,” said Chris.
“The reaction to them going back to school has been incredible, but returning to the rugby club will be momentous for many.
“While Covid has been incredibly hard, everyone has tried to stay positive and active.
“The communication at all levels has helped keep people interested and keen. In fact, we have already had a number of new players look to join us.”
Reflecting on what the kids might have missed the most, Chris said: “Each other, and in many cases the physical release of charging around the pitch with the ball.
“Some will find this easy, others will need a bit more coaching. Initially we will be subject to some restrictions. It will be like a socially distanced reunion, and when we get the chance, watching the first team with a supporting cast of Superstars Mascots will be incredible.”
