REFORMS which could save leaseholders in Northwich thousands of pounds have been welcomed by the town’s MP.
Mike Amesbury has been campaigning against the leasehold scandal since he was first elected.
The issue centres around homeowners in leasehold properties having to pay well over the odds to buy the leasehold, or else face the prospect of being in an unsellable property.
But new laws, which have been unveiled by the Government following pressure from The Labour Party and campaign groups, will now make it simpler and cheaper for leaseholders to buy their properties.
Ground rents will also be scrapped for millions with a new right to extend leases to 990 years.
The Weaver Vale MP said: "Since I was first elected as an MP in 2017, this has been one of the biggest issues raised with me by constituents in Winnington Village and I’ve been fighting hard on their behalf to try and get this feudal system reformed.
"Although I welcome this announcement, more still needs to be done.
"Leasehold is a symbol of our broken housing system, with millions of England’s homeowners feeling like they’ve bought their home but still don’t own it.
"With so many announcements and false dawns from successive housing ministers the proof will be in the delivery.
"Justice must be done for the 4.5 million leaseholders trapped in this system."
