THE decision to reopen primary schools to all pupils in Cheshire has divided opinion on the first day back from the Christmas holidays.

Most primary schools welcomed children back to class today, apart from those which held an inset day.

The Government had insisted it would be safe for primary schools to reopen in most areas, despite coronavirus cases rising in recent weeks, with the infection rate more than doubling in parts of Cheshire in the past fortnight.

Teaching unions urged the Government to rethink the decision before schools reopened, and readers have been commenting about the school debate on the Guardian's Facebook page today, with some agreeing with the decision to let pupils back.

Tracey Maddox said: "Of course it is the right decision, kids need the school environment to be educated properly, not at home with stressed-out parents who are not teachers and too many distractions."

Tanya Alex Price added: "I felt fine about it and so did [my son]. Asked him if he felt scared and he said no."

Others disagreed with the decision to welcome youngsters back to class today.

"They should stay shut and do work on line if possible," said Mo Moston.

"I know they need their education but the need for them to stay safe is a bigger priority."

Carla Thompson said: "Hoping to hear they are staying shut as I don’t want to send mine back."

Sue Smallwood added: "I’d say no, children’s lives are more important they are our future, we need to get on top of the virus."

A number of readers said they could understand it if parents took a different opinion.

Suzanne Davies said: "Everybody's situation is different. One answer doesn't suit all.

"Some people are able to stay at home, others not. No one should be judging anybody else's decision, life is difficult enough."

Tara Howes added: "For me I don't think it's the right decision, however I do understand that some people will think it is and will have their reasons too."

Emma Jaffray's 17-year-old daughter Hazel studies at Knutsford Academy and her 11-year-old son Hamish attends The County High School Leftwich.

She told the Guardian that teachers are 'doing a great job' and felt they should be supported.

"It's unfair that they are getting a bit of a bashing because the unions are involved," Emma said.

"They have been getting on with it without much support or PPE, doing really well.

"The work from home has been all organised really well and we have been kept informed of any changes."
