WINSFORD became the first town in Cheshire for GPs to adminster the Covid jab in the community.

For many elderly, frail and vulnerable residents it was the first time they had left home since the first lockdown in March.

Staff from all five GP practices delivered the Pfizer/BioNTech injection yesterday to 975 residents aged over 80 at Dene Drive Primary Care Centre in a meticulously planned operation.

Swanlow GP Dr Jonathan Griffiths said: "I would like to thank the people of Winsford for their support and understanding in getting this done.

"It's a monumental achievement. So much work has gone into the vaccination programme and we are very pleased with how it is going."

A team of eight marshalls greeted residents and guided them into the clinic.

Families and friends dropped their loved ones off to have the jab.

John Malam, who co-ordinated the volunteers, said: "It was run like a military operation because of the large numbers. Marshalls met them with a smile. Once inside, medical practitioners worked their magic. It was a seamless journey from the moment they stepped inside."

Patients were led into a clinic and then had to wait outside in a heated marquee for 15 minutes after receiving the vaccination to make sure there were no adverse reactions. Thankfully, no one showed any negative responses and everyone was able to go home.

Volunteers Peter Wilson, Catherine Ashford and Chris Brennan greeted patients and marshalled traffic

"Many of the residents told us how grateful they were," said John. "For many it was the first time they had left their homes since March. A couple said they hadn't been out of their house for years.

"It was an an emotional experience and a powerful day for many. Everyone smiled and went home safe."
