A COFFEE and cake sale has raised more than £1,000 in memory of an incredible woman.

Middlewich mum Tess Keefe organised the Macmillan Cancer Support afternoon to celebrate the life of her mum Joyce Davies, who sadly died from bowel cancer.

The fundraiser teamed up with friend Rebecca Page and daughter Rosie, 13, a pupil at Middlewich High School, to host the event at The King's Lock in Booth Lane on Sunday.

"It was an incredible afternoon of sunshine and community spirit," said Tess."I put blankets out but the sun shone all afternoon. People stayed all afternoon and then had dinner and drinks in the pub afterwards.

Hundreds of Middlewich residents attended the event, keeping to social distancing rules by wearing masks and sitting at tables of six.

Local businesses rallied to donate prizes for a raffle and Rebecca put the Great British Bake off to shame with her beautiful homemade cakes.

Macmillan reported a drop in donations which prompted Rebecca and Tess to stage the event.

"Thirteen years ago my beautiful mum departed this mortal coil after an incredibly courageous battle with cancer," said Tess, 41. "Since then I've known so many friends lose loved ones and one thing that has really stood out is the support received from charities like Macmillan that has eased some of the most difficult times.

"My mum was the most amazing person ever. She was always doing stuff for charity and became Woman of the Year. This is just the type of thing she would have done. She would have loved it."

“It is devastating the effect Covid-19 has had on the charity," she said. "They are such a valuable resource for families already going through difficult times. We are delighted to have been able to help in some small way and indebted to the Middlewich community for their support. We would also like to thank the Kings Lock for allowing us to use their marquee free of charge. “
