NEW figures from Public Health England show how far the rate of new coronavirus cases in Cheshire is compared to Leicester.

The city has become the first in the UK to begin a local lockdown after a surge in new Covid-19 cases.

The latest and most complete information on new Covid-19 cases in England has now been revealed by Public Health England.

It shows the rate of new cases in each area based on tests that have been carried out both in laboratories and in the wider community, making it more comprehensive than the daily figure published by the Department of Health.

The new figures published today, July 1, show that as of the week ending June 21, Leicester had 140.2 coronavirus cases per 100,000 population.

In contrast, Cheshire East – including Knutsford, Wilmslow and Middlewich – had 16 per 100,000 population.

And in Cheshire West, including Northwich and Winsford, there were 12.3 coronavirus cases per 100,000 population.

While the figures for Cheshire are comfortably below Leicester's, both boroughs are in the top 40 across England for coronavirus cases, out of 150.
