SCRUB hubs have been popping up all over the UK as volunteers stitch together to make clothing for the NHS during the Covid 19 pandemic – and it is no different here in Northwich.

Groups of crafty stitchers from across the county have been getting behind their sewing machines to support the For the Love of Scrubs campaign on Facebook.

A local version of the social media group, co-ordinated by Emma Dalzell Kitching, now has almost 900 members and has so far raised £5,275 through Go Fund Me to buy fabric and supplies to make the scrubs.

Members of the Mid Cheshire Hospitals – Leighton/Northwich – For the Love of Scrubs group are not only making medics’ plain clothes in a range of sizes, but also washing bags so the clothes can be transported and washed safely by staff at home, and headbands to ease the pressure of face masks.

Northwich Guardian:

Among the hundreds of Cheshire volunteers who have answered the call to arms is Witton Women’s Institute in Northwich whose members Carolyn Leonard, Jill Wright, Sue Hillam and Anne Harrison have been using their sewing skills to support the campaign.

Carolyn, who has been sewing since childhood, said the group wanted to play their part to support the NHS after spotting Emma’s call for help online.

Northwich Guardian:

The 54-year-old, from Rudheath, said: “The NHS staff are absolutely incredible. This is just a way that we can do something to help support them at this difficult time.

“My WI pals have been working really hard and we know there are a great many other sewers and crafters in the immediate area who are raiding their craft stash and making items to be sent to the NHS.”

Carolyn’s 76-year-old mum, Pauline Norbury who lives in Knutsford, has also been part of the effort.

Carolyn said: “It was my mum who taught me to sew. She’s been busy making washing bags – I think she’s enjoyed doing something positive which helps this wonderful cause.”

Carolyn said there is even a chance for those who can’t work their way around a sewing machine to play their part.

Northwich Guardian:

She added: “There is a national and local appeal, as well as a fundraising page which means anyone can get involved even if they can’t sew.”
