WE know it's hard to top your mum's roast but when you're looking for a place to treat yourself on a Sunday, where do you go?

That was the question we asked on our Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich and Knutsford Guardian website and Facebook page this week as part of our 160th birthday celebrations this year.

And your amazing responses will no doubt help a few people decide where to take their mum for Mother's Day later this month.

We have pulled together a top six below based on the volume of comments and the messages with the most detail as to why a cafe, pub or restaurant was simply the best when it comes to Sunday lunch.

Vale Royal Abbey Arms, Oakmere

Northwich Guardian:

Tucked away near Delamere Forest, this 200-year-old pub appears to be extremely popular with our readers with special praise for their Yorkshire puddings.

Readers loved the varied menu and that dogs were allowed too.

Another comment added: "Without a doubt I have never had a roast dinner as good as the Vale Royal Abbey Arms in Northwich.

"I'm always sceptical going out for roasts because they're never as good as the one my mum makes, but since coming here I've told my mum to come along and enjoy the same home cooked quality but with no washing up!

"They also do a smaller portion roast which is perfect for when I take my mother out as she doesn't have a huge appetite."

The Old Broken Cross, Northwich

Northwich Guardian:

Situated alongside the Trent and Mersey canal on the edge of Northwich, this family-friendly pub got the thumbs up from you for their 'amazing food, fantastic service' and catering well for allergies.

Another comment added: "Huge portions and everything is cooked from scratch with proper gravy."

Rose and Crown, Knutsford

Northwich Guardian:

The friendly service and quality food was why many people rated this place.

One comment added: "Brilliant food, outstanding service and excellent beers and wines. Best Sunday lunch I’ve had in a long time."

The Antrobus Arms, Northwich

Northwich Guardian:

This family-run pub and restaurant is another one that's also dog-friendly in the bar area.

One comment added: "Fantastic quality, reasonable price and great service."

Blakemere Village, Northwich

If you want to pile your plate high with as many roasties and Yorkshires as you want, then the carvery here might be the one for you.

One reader said: "We only discovered this place recently but it's brilliant.

"The food is great quality and it's really good value."

The Hayhurst Arms
